10th of December: World Human Rights Day and Bahrain’s Human Violations Day From: Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights & the undersigned organizations Dear Messer/The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Amnesty International Human Rights Watch International Federation of Human Rights Article 19 Human Rights Defenders on the Front Line World Organization against TortureThe undersigned organizations are highly concerned by the sever human rights violations taking place in Bahrain on a daily basis, particularly while approaching the anniversary of World Day for Human Rights. Bahraini government is still violating the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights stipulating the protection of humans against the violations committed by governmental officials. The political and human rights activists are still suffering detentions and harassments in Bahrain. The most recent cases are those of Mohamed Said Al-Sahlawy and Hussein Abdul Aziz Al-Habashy.Both Al-Sahlawy and Al-Habashy are held for 15 days pending investigation. The Public Prosecutor convicted them with holding publications and flyers calling for boycotting the elections of 25 November 2006. On Sunday 3 December 2006, the Public Prosecutor renewed their detention for additional 15 days, upon Clause 2, Article 147 of Bahrain Criminal Law, which entitles the powers of Minor Court judge to the Public Prosecutor in the state security crimes stipulated in Articles 112 to 185 of Bahrain Penal Code.Popular committees’ activists such a Ebrahim Al-Sandy are still subject to trials in fabricated claims. The claim against Al-Sandy is still heard by the court and is not eliminated yet like other similar cases. The hearing session was rather postponed to 5 February 2007. The undersigned organizations call for taking action to eliminate human rights violations in Bahrain. They also call upon Bahraini government to consider human rights standards in its future decisions and not to help human rights activists to practice their prospected roles rather than harassing them.
