March 29, 2010Mr. Abdalla Ali3819 47th StSan Diego, CA 92105-2862Dear Mr. Ali,Thank you for writing to me to express your concerns about the current political situation in Bahrain. I appreciate hearing from you on this important international matter and apologize for the delay in my response. As you know, Human Rights Watch released a report in February of this year based on interviews with former detainees in Bahrain and concluded that the Government of Bahrain has repeatedly resorted to torture to secure confessions from detainees. These reports are deeply distressing, particularly for the prospects of political reform in the country. As a member of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, I believe that we must continue to put pressure on the Government of Bahrain to rein in abuses of power. The fact that Bahrain is a major non-NATO ally does not mean that we cannot condemn the government for gross human rights violations. You can count on me to look for ways ensure that the Bahraini Government is addressing this issue.
Again, thank you for contacting me. As your representative, I both need and value your thoughts and ideas. Please sign up for my E-Newsletter on my website, www.house.gov/susandavis if you would like to receive updates about what is happening in Congress. With warm regards, S A. DMember of Congress |
