Manama, Bahrain (AHN) – Bahrain may be the first country in the Arab world to have a rehabilitation center for victims of torture. The Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society (BHRWS) has put forward the idea of a center which they plan to launch on the occasion of World Torture Day on June 26.

Reports from Dry Dock prison indicated that the security authorities had, once again, joined three new cases of criminal prisoners seriously ill with infectious diseases with December detainees (15 detainees, including well known human rights defenders). According to these reports, the new prison inmates are suffering from epidemic TB, which is infectious through air.

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the detention and torture of Shaker Mohammed Abdul-Hussein Abdul-Aal, Sadeq Jawad Ahmed Al-Fardan and Hasan Kathom Ebrahim Ahmed of the Unemployment Committee; Ali Mohamed Habib Ashoor and Habib Mohamed Habib Ashoor of the Committee for Detainees; Fadhel Abbas Mohamed Ashoor of the Committee Against High Prices; and Sayed Omran Hameed Adnan of the Committee Against One Percent. These human rights defenders are active defenders of labour rights in Bahrain.
UN Vote Upholds Council Membership Standards on Rights

Pakistan and Bahrain must now live up to the standards set for Human Rights Council membership,” said Juliette de Rivero, Geneva director at Human Rights Watch. “They must work to strengthen the council’s capacity to protect the victims of human rights worldwide, rather than allowing abusive governments to be shielded from scrutiny.”

Bahrain: Families and detainees of Karzakan incidents affirm torture

1st, 2nd June First sessions for the detainees facing high charges upon confessions obtained by torture 5pm (local time) on Thursday, May 8, marks the last visit scheduled by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB)for the families of Karzakan incidents detainees (29 detainees were house arrested or surrendered themselves after receipt of summons during the period March 27 until April 15). The visits came as a result of the families’ requests and protests before the Public Prosecution (PP) after hearing reports about their sons being subjected to torture. The visit permits were received on April 21, 2008, which was initiated three days later, on a rate of two visits per day, at 4 and 5pm daily.

A demonstration planned for the afternoon was cancelled when police officers armed with tear gas canisters and rubber bullet arrived. Bahrain first country reviewed by UN Human Rights Council

Geneva – The UN Human Rights Council’s new mechanism for examining the human rights record of all 192 UN members in a rolling programme was put to the test for the first time Monday. Bahrain was among the first wave of 16 countries chosen to be scrutinized under the so-called universal periodic review mechanism in this first session which lasts until April 18.
