Bahrain: Where is Ali Abdulemam?

As I daily check my facebook messages and notifications, I also check Ali Abdelemam’s profile. Everyday I wonder if there are any posts from him. Everyday I check his wall to see his family’s posts, and photos hoping that I could at least know something about him. I ask my friends and colleagues in Bahrain about Ali, and no one knows anything about him. I wonder where is Ali now. Ali, a father of three, disappeared and left us wondering about his destiny. Why did Ali disappear?

Bahrain to retry 20 medics in uprising case

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Twenty Bahraini medical professionals convicted on uprising-linked charges and sentenced to prison terms face retrial in civilian courts, a lawyer said Thursday. Lawyer Jalila al-Sayed said a judge revoked last week’s decision to proceed with only five cases and refer the other 15 doctors and nurses to a medical disciplinary board. All were convicted of anti-state crimes during last year’s unrest.

Bahrain hunger striker weak after 36 days

Five weeks into his hunger strike, family members say Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, one of the best-known human rights activists in Bahrain, is now so weak that he can barely stand. He started the hunger strike on February 8 to protest his own detention and that of several other activists arrested last April. Al-Khawaja and six others were given life sentences by a military court in what Bahraini and international human rights groups have called an unfair trial.

On the occasion of the World Day Against Cyber Censorship, Bahrain continues its violations and repressive measures against netizens and internet freedom, with the help of western technologies. Amid last year’s events, many websites were reported blocked due to their reporting on casualties among protestors and uploading photos and videos of peaceful protests being brutally attacked by security forces. Website administrators were arrested and tortured.

Well, the protests in Bahrain have quite a long history and they go back even to the 1970es when there was a debate in the country about the setting up of the parliamentary functions and how to really divide governance and rule in the country. We’ve seen spiraling protests in the early 1990es when the Government was suspended and this continues to the modern days.

Bahrain and Belarus have been added to Reporters Without Borders’ annual list of “enemies of the internet”. They join 10 other nations on the campaign group’s register of states that restrict net access, filter content and imprison bloggers. India and Kazakhstan have also joined RWB’s list of “countries under surveillance” because of concerns that they are becoming more repressive.
