Dear Miss Ali: Thank you for contacting me to express concern about human rights violations in Bahrain. As a member of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, I share your concern and appreciated hearing from you.

As reported in the State Department’s 2009 International Religious Freedom Report, Bahrain has failed to live up to its constitutional obligation to protect religious freedom. Government discrimination against Shi’a Muslims in government representation, employment and education is the most prominent form of prejudice in the Sunni dominated country.  Human Rights Watch and other human rights organizations have also reported the use of torture and abuse in Bahraini prisons and instances of politically motivated arrests.  I strongly agree that the U.S. should use its engagement with Bahrain and the 2005 U.S.-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement to promote democratic values and enhance the rule of law. I assure you that I will keep the concerns we share foremost in mind as I continue working to advance human rights in Bahrain.

Again, thank you for contacting me and I hope you will continue to keep in touch on issues of concern.

With kind regards, I am
                                                                                       Sincerely,                                                                                      H A. W

                                                                                      Member of Congress
